D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine Endorses Jim Shea

Cites Shea’s leadership and track record of results

BALTIMORE, MD (May 30, 2018) – Shea for Maryland announced on Wednesday that District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine has endorsed Jim Shea for governor.

Racine, the first attorney general to be elected in D.C., said in a statement, “Jim Shea is the only candidate in the field who successfully managed a national business for nearly 30 years. He has the smarts and experience to understand the state’s problems, identify the best ways to address them, and apply his discipline and ability to get the job done. Maryland deserves a proven leader with a track record of creating jobs, and a record of donating time, energy and resources to the communities that need it most.”

In a video accompanying the announcement, Racine describes the guidance he received as a young lawyer at Shea’s firm, as well as the personal support Shea provided him when Racine’s father passed away. He says, “I’ll never forget the many walks that we took, where sometimes not a word was shared, but I knew that I had the support of somebody who reminded me a lot of my dad.”

Racine also describes Shea’s strong executive experience in the video, saying, “When I think of the core qualities of leadership – having the smarts and capacity to do a job, having a great vision, and then being able to attract the right talent and implement the vision – I have no doubt that Jim Shea can do it better than any other candidate who is running for governor of Maryland.”

Racine has served as the attorney general of Washington, D.C. since 2015, where he has achieved significant juvenile criminal justice reforms. His career includes representing indigent residents in the D.C. Public Defender Service and volunteering as a law student in a clinic supporting migrant farm workers’ rights to serving as Associate White House Counsel in the first Clinton Administration. Attorney General Racine was the first African-American managing partner of a top-100 US law firm, Venable LLP, where he led a team of over 600 attorneys, and has also served on the District’s Judicial Nomination Commission.
