Hogan Must Lift Inflationary Cap And Fund Education At General Fund Rate

BALTIMORE, MD (October 26, 2017) – Today, the Kirwan Commission announced that it is delaying the release of its recommendations until after the legislative session. In response, Jim Shea issued the following statement:

“Maryland’s students cannot withstand another year of Governor Hogan’s failing policies and underfunding. Governor Hogan must not use this delay as a reason to undermine the ‘Bridge to Kirwan’ legislation passed in the last legislative session. He must also, at a minimum, lift the inflationary cap on the funding formula and allocate funds to education at the rate of General Fund growth. Until the Kirwan Commission comes through with the recommendation, the State must catch up on its deferred investments in K-12.”

Jim Shea is the former Chair of Venable LLP, the largest law firm in the state of Maryland. He is also the former Chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, the Empower Baltimore Management Corporation, and the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. He has served on the boards of the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Equal Justice Council.
